I am both delighted and honored to be collaborating with Simply Be again. Two of my favourite things i worked on last year where also SB collabs. There was the Curvy Girl’s Guide To Summer Dressing and also the really popular Steal Holly Willoughby’s Style. Click on either if you fancy a read and maybe some inspiration. I say this every time but when i have an idea to put together, Simply Be are right up there, as size wise i can include so many and i am all about that life! Not to mention that they have all the styles i’m looking for and more. Getting right into it, the title was going to read Winter Wardrobe Essentials, however i had a little re-think. With the weather dictating so much of what we wear though even in Summer it can be hard to pinpoint seasonal wear. Obviously there are certain fabrics and pieces that are linked more to different seasons but living in this part of the world i’d say you could wear majority of these all year round. Definitely Autumn, Winter and Spring Wardrobe Essentials anyways. So here we go with cold weather wardrobe picks.
I have put together some pieces that i think are wardrobe winners for this time of year. Nothing trend driven, all things that i’ve worn in one way or another over the last few colder seasons and will continue to do so. I am in no way saying you need to have these things but rather sharing some food for thought to build a strong wardrobe of staples. Therefore you can add in trend pieces and fresh bits as the seasons change while still having some structure within your wardrobe.
Faux Fur Gilet
Kicking things off with a staple that has graced my wardrobe for over ten years now. Season in season out, faux fur gilets are in my wardrobe. Not only do i adore the look of these waistcoats but they are a great way of adding both warmth and texture to an outfit and your wardrobe. I find fur coats very bulky and gilets are great way to offset that while still getting the luxe vibe and the cosy feeling. I counted back and the current black gilet in my wardrobe was bought in 2010! That is how long i have been wearing it, almost ten years. That is the sign of a true staple. There is nothing wrong with it at all, i bought well and it lasted the wear. I however have grown and it no longer meets in the middle. Something that never bothered me but in the last year or so i feel it isn’t sitting as well so it was time for another. This new one below will be in my wardrobe for so many years to come also and will be worn greatly.
There is a lot of wear to be had from these gilets through majority of the months of the year. Add over shirts , knitwear , long sleeved dresses and polo necks. Layer over leather or denim jackets to create a whole new jacket of great interest and juxtaposition. My favourite thing about wearing a faux fur gilet is that you get the rich look and texture without all of the bulk. I opt for a gilet over a fur jacket time and time again. You don’t get too over-heated either when for example going shopping. Even though i chose black here i do like a natural option too which goes really well with tan and more neutral tones.
This particular option has some attributes that are real selling points. It has pockets! Dare i say more? Handy on more than a level for practical reasons of holding your phone or keys but also for housing your cold hands. The second thing that i really liked was functional. This gilet has several closures on the inside of both sides. Not all faux fur gilets have this so the option to wear it closed is an added bonus. Added warmth and a different way of wearing and styling. You chose where and how many hooks to close. The faux fur itself is a shaggy style which is new for me but i’m happy to try.
Not a genius one up next, i know, boots for Winter – groundbreaking. However, boots have never been bigger or more popular than they have been / are right now. There are more styles to choose from than there has ever been in one season from biker boots to hiking , army and military styles. Laced , spiked , buckled , studded you name it. Lace-up boots have been a favourite of mine and a lot of others too. In the past year i had worn my DM style boots so much. I love the look of them but also thought what would be great would be a pair that would work dressy or casual. What do ya reckon? did i find them? They have been working really well for me so i am going to say a big yes.
I can confirm the comfort of these. The cleated sole adds added protection to the sole of the foot and that we like. Easy to get on and wear. There is an elasticated panel as you can see and they fit really well as wide fitting footwear. No need to fuss about with the laces as you simply use the zip. I have worn these dressy and dressy casual. As you can see i’ve styled these boots with each piece/ look that i have mentioned and they went so well. With jeans or tights. Leather trousers or leggings look fab too. I really liked the high shine finish that these booties have. The whole look of them was really for me.

Next up is something that i have had on and off in my wardrobe but something that i felt it was now lacking. I love the pure ease that jumper dresses bring. Not to mention comfort. Are you noticing a pattern here? Comfort is key and to be so easy to wear is the aim of the game. While going through of the jumper dresses that Simply Be had to offer and most where fitted, knitted styles. That is a mouthful! With how much i enjoy mixing the sports luxe vibe into my looks i thought this sweater style would work best for me. And if you hadn’t noticed – it has pockets.
I am getting The benefits of a jumper dress but with a great nod to the sports vibe. In hindsight this is more of a tunic. I am just under 5’5″ and it is very short on. I don’t think i would be too comfortable going about my day with just light tights. I’ve since been wearing it with printed leggings and it works great as a longer line tunic style. The layered sleeve detail is a little something extra. It’s super cosy and ticks that street-style layered look which isn’t something that i am mad about either. There was other colour options too that i would easily slot into my wardrobe now i know how handy they would be, especially the tan colour would go fab with leather leggings. Nothing hugely fancy but something i feel will wear itself and it is a great length for leggings which are pretty much all i wear.

Moving on to a piece that my wardrobe has not been without as far back as i can remember. Again i have a leather skirt that i wore constantly for a good 3 years. I’m sure people were saying did i have anything else to wear. But i just loved it so much and that is the true telling point of a good staple. I adore tucking t-shirts into leather skirts. Jumpers and collared shirts too that give great contrast to the look. Great for a night out dressed up but equally great dressed down with boots and basics. Leather itself doesn’t really date either and a well fitting skirt will see you well.
This particular style is different for me. I’ve done plain , chunky zipped , studded , you name it. Here i opted for a button up or down whatever way you look at it. The buttons are actually poppers which again is something different for me. I like the look of it though and the mock pockets which i would have liked if they functioned but hey ho. It’s a grand length for a mini and would work fine for day wear with tights. The finish of the faux leather isn’t high shine or wet look. I sized up for comfort and length which i was happy with and it helped with the poppers too with room when sitting down. A happy edition to my wardrobe that i am sure you will see me sharing a lot more.

I couldn’t put a wardrobe staples together without including the illusive ” nice top “. You might know it as the top from jeans and a nice top. Something that we all reach for but i feel we can lack in our wardrobe as staples. Your go to for a last minute night out or more casual affair. A no fuss, time saving, non brain frying option. With it being a collection of pieces acceptable to wear right now that it’s cold but also want to be able to get some wear throughout the year. For that reason i chose this winter flower top. The black base on the prints keeps it from looking like it should be packed away with your suitcase and sun cream. Wear it now with leather look leggings, black jeans or trousers. Come Summer, how fab would this be with white jeans and sandals. The yellows, purples and greens of the print would really pop against white. You could also always pair with a pencil skirt for a stylish work look.
There is so much detail and interest going on here that i thought it was a great option to have. Mixed print pieces were huge last year and packed a real punch. A statement top that is really easy to wear and does all the work for you so you really can just chuck on jeans and a nice top. What won it for me was the wrap cut which we know is super figure friendly. It gives a great shape and draws the eye down. The frill detail on the sleeve was an added bonus too. It falls at a length that isn’t short by any means. It could be a tad longer but i don’t think it would be the top it is if it was. Does that make sense? There are no zips and an elasticated waist so that gets a thumbs up from me too.

If you follow me on my social media, you are probably sick of me harping on about smock dresses. It is a style and shape that i am really loving. The actual comfort is insane. Smocks can be a scary silhouette for some and you think it may make you look bigger. I haven’t found this is the styles that are out at the moment at all. There is an empire line of sorts at the waist and the rest of the skirt just flows and falls. This to me is bottom friendly. I just can’t get enough of the style and shape so when i saw this option i was really excited.
It has pockets, need i say more? Made from a fab lightweight chambray fabric for that denim look. There is also a classic blue denim colour way available too, which i will link below, but i thought the black was really different. Having more blue denim in my wardrobe i felt this was a better option and would work better with pieces that i already own. Straight off the bat i wore this dress as is above with tights and boots. No messing around, no frills just trouble free comfortableness. It still looks like you put some effort in though as the print and look of the fabric give off a vibe. Since then i have worn it with leggings and converse which worked better than i imagined. Another option would be to layer a white polo neck underneath to keep cosy for the next few months. I think come festival season this would be a really cute option with boots, runners or even wellies. Ideal for a city break or Summer holidays with sandals and coloured bag. A true year round wardrobe staple.

Speaking of denim dresses, i couldn’t let this post go by without including two denim dresses from Simply Be that are already in my wardrobe. They have been well and true tested coming up to a year now. Both are still available and relevent so i wanted to include them. I guess this kind of validates my point that choosing staples like this will be worn year in and out without dating.
I spoke extensively about both these dresses already so i won’t repeat myself and bore you. If you do fancy having a read though about fit, fabric etc and some ways to wear then you can find the post here.

That is my lot for now. I sure you will see all of these pieces styled several ways as time goes on. What are your Winter wardrobe essentials?
