As you may have seen, Nike added a plus sized mannequin to their London flagship floor this week and well there was uproar. They also added a para-sport model too but i bet you didn’t see or hear about that. I love to see, pardon the pun, healthy discussion on these things but some comments and articles have gone wayyy too far. I won’t even credit the one that got me most cause it deserves no more publicity but the statements where just ridiculous! As if any of ye on here are gonna be like ‘k i HAVE to put on 8 stone to look like Kiera’! It has only worked in reverse like that for years because for so long as viewers, fans and society we have just been shown one type and it was labelled right or beauty. Neither are right or wrong. They are all bodies. All people.
Nike Plus Size Mannequin
All that introducing more mannequin types does is allow shoppers to be represented and relate to what they see. It’s so much easier to imagine and judge clothes when you see them on a body type closer to yours. The arguement that all plus size people need to loose weight is so ironic. It’s hard enough going to the gym as a bigger person or getting out to exercise without the added worry of ‘ok no gear fits me’. Having nice, well fitting sports clothed can boost confidence and not put further obsticles ahead of you. All i see personally is more representation but then again size is not something that is a big thing for me.
How the argument that this model is promoting obesity is madness. If this was directed against a race, sex or religion there would be uproar. How is this type of shaming any different? Who is to say the size zero model is quote on quote healthy. I am not unhealthy cause i’m big. I’m big because of my health. Nobody knows why a persons appearence looks how it does. Are they suffering with a medical condition or a mental illness? There are plenty of athletes, dancers you name it of larger frames who are healthier than someone of a slim build who maybe abuses their body. Who are we to judge?
This all reminded me of this post i wrote awhile back. It was the first time and thankfully the only time that i was fat shamed since starting my blog. You can read that here, with my thoughts on size. Likewise with the post i wrote when there was a backlash over a program made about plus sized bloggers. All of these positive things being done to make the fashion world more diverse, inclusive and representative of consumers and every time it is met with this negativity.
There are so many ways to exercise but besides the fact, people might just want to wear Nike? A very popular brand especially with youths so having a broader range in sizes will include more. Ath-leisure has been a HUGE trend over the last few years and the rise of people wearing active-wear day to day with no intention of going to the gym etc has been huge. People like comfort and well fitting clothes. Nike plus is available in the Nike store itself (i’ve seen it in the Blanchardstown branch) , On ASOS and Littlewoods to name but a few. I will link some styles below that caught my eye.

By the by my glasses read BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. Ain’t that the truth.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this?
